How to Preview Base64 Safely and Recover the Original File

Decode raw Base64, Base64URL, or a Data URL, verify its MIME type from decoded bytes, preview supported formats safely, and download the reconstructed file.

Previewing Base64 starts with distrusting the label

A Base64 string hides the shape of its original content. The first few encoded characters may look familiar, but reading those characters by eye is not a reliable way to decide whether the result is a PNG, PDF, ZIP archive, audio clip, UTF-8 text file, or unknown binary. A complete Data URL adds a media-type declaration, yet that declaration was written by whoever created the string. It can be missing, too broad, accidentally wrong, or deliberately misleading. A useful previewer therefore validates the encoding, reconstructs the bytes, and inspects the byte signature before selecting a display context.

Successful decoding answers only one question: the characters can be interpreted with a Base64 alphabet. It does not prove that the reconstructed file is harmless, complete, or correctly labeled. Safe preview also depends on how a format is rendered. Raster images, supported audio and video, and PDFs can use browser-managed local Blob URLs. Plain text and code can be printed as escaped text. HTML, JavaScript, XML, and SVG should not be inserted as live page markup merely because their bytes decoded successfully. Archives, fonts, office documents, and unidentified binary values are better offered as downloads for an appropriate application.

Base64 Previewer: method and assumptions

Start by separating a `data:` URL header from its payload, and require the `;base64` marker for that input form. Remove permitted ASCII whitespace from the payload without silently deleting arbitrary punctuation. Reject a mixture of the standard `+` and `/` alphabet with the URL-safe `-` and `_` alphabet, then add only the padding that an otherwise valid unpadded value requires. Calculate the decoded size before allocating memory and enforce the browser limit. Decode in chunks whose lengths are divisible by four, inspect the reconstructed header for known signatures, compare it with any declared MIME type, and let the byte evidence control the preview when the two disagree.

RFC 4648 defines the standard and URL-safe Base64 alphabets, padding, and handling of non-alphabet characters. RFC 2397 defines the `data:` URL structure and warns that its media type carries the security considerations of that content. The WHATWG MIME Sniffing standard supplies signature-based evidence and explains why inconsistent type interpretation can affect security. MDN documents local Blob URLs for images, media, PDFs, and downloads, including the need to revoke an object URL when it is no longer accessible. These sources support strict parsing, byte-first detection, cautious rendering, and explicit cleanup.

Base64 Previewer example you can verify

Paste `data:text/plain;charset=utf-8;base64,VE9PTEZJTkE=`. The header declares UTF-8 plain text and the payload contains twelve Base64 characters. After padding is considered, the decoded size is eight bytes. Decoding produces the ASCII text `TOOLFINA`, so a plain-text preview and a `decoded.txt` download agree with the declaration. For a mismatch test, keep the same `text/plain` declaration but replace the payload with a valid PNG payload beginning `iVBORw0KGgo`. The decoded PNG signature should win, the page should warn about the declaration, and the download should use a PNG extension.

For normalized padded Base64, decoded bytes = `3 × (characters ÷ 4) − padding characters`. The count excludes whitespace and the Data URL header. `VE9PTEZJTkE=` has twelve characters and one padding marker, so `3 × (12 ÷ 4) − 1 = 8` bytes. Unpadded Base64URL can use the same calculation after the required zero, one, or two `=` markers are restored. A length whose unpadded remainder is one cannot represent a complete Base64 value and must be rejected rather than guessed.

Where Base64 Previewer needs extra care

Line breaks copied from MIME email content are valid whitespace, but punctuation, percent escapes, truncated inspector output, or a misplaced `=` can indicate corruption. Raw text has no reliable magic number, so an absent declaration may lead to the conservative `text/plain` result. ZIP-based formats share one container signature and cannot always be refined without a file name. Browser support for AVIF, audio codecs, video codecs, and embedded PDF viewers varies, so a valid result may still need download instead of inline display. Text preview is intentionally capped while the complete bytes remain downloadable. Decoded malware remains malware; local processing prevents upload but does not replace antivirus or document sandboxing.

Compare the detected MIME type with the declaration, confirm the decoded byte count, open the downloaded file in the expected application, and round-trip critical fixtures. Watch for one recurring error: trusting a data: prefix without checking the bytes, executing decoded HTML or SVG, or assuming a successful decode proves that a file is safe.

Checks before keeping the result

  • Raw standard Base64, unpadded Base64URL, a Base64 Data URL, or a local text file containing one of those values.
  • Compare the detected MIME type with the declaration, confirm the decoded byte count, open the downloaded file in the expected application, and round-trip critical fixtures.
  • Signature detection cannot identify every format, browser codec support differs, text preview is UTF-8 oriented and capped, and a valid download can still contain unsafe content.
  • Record the original Base64 source, declared MIME type, detected type, decoded byte count, and a checksum when the reconstruction is part of a repeatable test.
  • Use File to Base64 for the reverse conversion, the text encoder for UTF-8 strings, and the JSON formatter after downloading or copying decoded JSON.

The Base64 value and reconstructed bytes remain in the browser and are discarded when the result is cleared or the page closes. The browser separates any Data URL metadata, validates one Base64 alphabet and its padding, decodes in bounded chunks, checks known byte signatures, and chooses a non-executing preview context.
